DEEPER THAN THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IS TALL

At 1,645 feet deep, Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States and tenth deepest in the world. To put that into perspective, the Empire State Building stands 1,454 feet tall — meaning the entire skyscraper could fit beneath Tahoe's surface with nearly 200 feet of water still above its peak. 

MORE PURE THAN BOTTLED WATER

Lake Tahoe's water is estimated to be 99.994% pure, making it one of the purest large lakes in the world. Fed by filtered snowmelt and protected by its unique alpine ecosystem, the lake is renowned for its exceptional clarity. On a calm day, objects beneath the surface can be visible up to 70 feet deep, giving Tahoe its signature crystal-clear blue waters. 

TAKE OVER 700 YEARS TO REFELL

Lake Tahoe holds an astonishing 39 trillion gallons of water. If the lake were completely drained, it would take more than 700 years to refill naturally because only a small amount of new water flows into the lake each year. TAHOE'S FISH LIVE IN JUST 10% OF THE LAKE

Despite Lake Tahoe's immense size, an estimated 90% of its fish inhabit just 10% of the lake. Most species thrive in the shallower nearshore waters, where sunlight, vegetation, and abundant food create the ideal habitat, while the lake's deep, cold waters remain surprisingly sparse with aquatic life.

LAKE TAHOE CREATES ITS OWN WEATHER

Thanks to its vast size and elevation, Lake Tahoe creates its own microclimate, causing weather conditions to change dramatically from one shoreline to the other. One side of the lake can be sunny and calm while the opposite side experiences clouds, wind, or even snowfall—making every visit to Tahoe a little different.
